Backward Compatibility for EES Files

EES can always read files written by earlier versions.  However the EES file written by your current version of EES may not be readable by older versions.   The EES file structure was changed in version 9.370 to allow new features (such as two sets of units for variables) to allow for future expansion.  Files saved with version 9.370 and newer cannot be opened by EES versions older than 9.370.  For this reason, the following dialog may appear if you open an EES file that was written with a version of EES before 9.370 (or create a new file)and then try to save it using the Save or Save As... commands.

Clicking the Save Normal button will save the file in the normal manner with all of the current capabilities in the your EES version.  This is the recommended action.  Save in Old Format will save the file in a format that can be read by older versions of EES (as well as the current version), but some capabilities (such as the second set of units used for output display of variables) will not be saved.  Select this button only if you plan to share your EES file with another person who has a version of EES older than 9.370.

If you select the Do not show this dialog again, EES will create (if necessary) the EES.NMW file and place an N on the second line of this file, which will stop the above dialog from being displayed.  If you later wish to return to the default behavior, delete the EES.NMW file, located in the same directory as the EES application or edit it (with text editor such as Notepad) do that the second line in the file any character other than N.  See EES File Formats for more information relating to the EES.NMW file.

Note that the Save As command also provides an option to save a file in the older (backward compatible) format.  This option is selected by clicking in the format type box, below the file name, as shown.

Selecting Backward Compatible EES file will save the file in a format that can be read by older versions of EES.  It is not possible to save a compressed (.EEZ) file in the older format.
